About me

  • Professor (adj) and senior consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry, Region Stockholm 20250401-
Professor of child and adolescent psychiatry, Uppsala University, 2016-2018
Professor of psychiatric epidemiology, KI, 2010-2016

Research

  • I study developmental pathways, correlates and outcomes of mental disorders primarily in children and young adults. I am particularly interested in causal mechanisms, risk assessment, and the prevention of interpersonal, including sexual, violence.

And in improving multimodal interventions to support disadvantaged and at-risk children and youth in avoiding adverse outcomes.

I also work with projects studying incidence, risk factors and outcomes for people in inpatient child and youth psychiatric care (on a ward) with or without coercion. Or in compulsory social care (National Board of Institutional Care) or custodial sanctions due to serious crime (closed youth care or [youth] prison).

At Karolinska Institutet, I work together with:
Clinical researchers at the Dept of Clinical Neuroscience/Centre for Psychiatry Research.
Epidemiologists and biostatisticians at the Dept of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics where I was previously (2010-2016) employed as professor.
I also collaborate with psychology and psychiatry professionals at:
Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, Canada
    The University of Southern Denmark
    Aarhus University
    Tampere University, Finland
    Oxford University, UK

Teaching

  • I am subject matter responsible and patient seminar teacher for child- and adolescent psychiatry at KI:s Study Programme in Medicine (swe: Läkarprogrammet) twice per semester.
And similarly at the child- and adolescent psychiatry subsection of the Study Programme in Speech-Language Pathology (swe: Logopedprogrammet) once yearly.

I am also course leader and lecturer for the only postgraduate specialist course in Sweden on Disruptive, Impulse Control and Conduct Disorders (swe: Beteendesyndrom) for late-stage resident physicians in child- and adolescent psychiatry (METIS), once every 18 months.
I founded and am senior advisor to the Swedish network of SAVRY and EARL trainers located at KI/Region Stockholm's Centre for Psychiatry Research and examiner for the training of new trainers. Network teachers provide many 3-day postgraduate trainings yearly in the use of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) and Early Assessment Risk List (EARL) decision-supports. The aim is to improve assessment and management of risks/needs in children (6-12 years) and youth (12-18 years) with known norm-breaking or antisocial behaviour.
I am responsible for a research methods course (psychiatric epidemiology) at the Clinical Psychiatry Research School for clinicians in psychiatry (KI - Region Stockholm), 2025-2027.
